Ring Road Pinch Points

Improvements at key roundabout junctions to improve access and reduce congestion.

The City’s Ring Road plays a vital role in providing access to the city centre, with improvements required to reduce congestion and accommodate key developments proposed as part of the Enterprise Zone. It is therefore proposed to take forward a package of initial improvements at Holloway Circus, Curzon Circle, Bordesley Circus and Haden Circus to enable growth in the Westside area, Digbeth, Eastside and support developments in Southside, specifically New Street Station and the new John Lewis department store.

Proposals are also being developed for Ashted Circus.

The proposals for the five junctions are currently at the development stage, below is an outline of the proposals being developed.

Bordesley Circus -A4540 Watery Lane Middleway / B4128 Coventry Road / A45 Small Heath Highway

A scheme to provide a signal-controlled one-way ‘hamburger’ lane through the centre of the roundabout, from A45 Small Heath Highway to the A4540 Ring Road north arm (Watery Lane Middleway) is being developed. The proposals include controlled pedestrian crossings on the main arms of the roundabout and a signal control of the informal cycle crossing point over the Ring Road to the north of the junction.

Haden Circus -A4540 Belgrave Middleway / A4540 Highgate Middleway / A4167 Highgate Road / A435 Haden Way

Proposals to provide a segregated left slip lane from Belgrave Middleway to Highgate Middleway and maintaining a flow on the Ring Road are being developed.

Holloway Circus - A38 Suffolk Street Queensway / Smallbrook Queensway / A38 Bristol Street / B4127 Holloway Head

The main proposals include a segregated left turn slip from Smallbrook Queensway westbound to Horse Fair and a segregated left turn slip from Holloway Head to Suffolk Road northbound.

Ashted Circus - A4540 Lawley Middleway / B4114 Jennens Road / A4540 Dartmouth Middleway / A47 Nechells Parkway

We will be converting Ashted Circus roundabout to a signalised cross road junction to improve traffic and connectivity between the city centre and wider area. Consultation starts 2nd February 2015 and ends 28th February 2015.

A Public Exhibition for Ashted Circus will be held on 11th February 2015 from 4.00pm to 8.00pm at Nechells Community Sports Centre, Rupert Street, Nechells, Birmingham B7 5DT, Tel: 0121 464 4373.

Curzon Circle - A4540 Lawley Middleway / B4132 Vauxhall Road / Curzon Street.

If HS2 proceeds it is likely the existing roundabout will be replaced with a signalised crossroads junction. The measures to be implemented as part of the Pinch Point proposals are currently being prepared and are expected to be relatively minor in nature.

Public exhibitions for these schemes were held in July 2014. We would like to thank everybody who attended and gave us their views and feedback.
