What is a nursery class?

A nursery class is part of an existing primary school.

In Birmingham admissions to a nursery school or nursery class is not managed by Birmingham City Council. You will need to contact the school directly. The nursery school or nursery class will provide you with an application form, information regarding the availability and allocation of places and the criteria for nursery places. They will also confirm the date when the application form needs to be submitted and the date when places will be offered.

For a list of nursery schools and nursery classes available in your area contact the Children's Information and Advice Service on 0121 303 1888.

If your child is not offered a place, the nursery school or nursery class usually keeps a waiting list and will advise you should a place become available. Alternatively, the Children's Information and Advice Service is able to provide details of private childcare providers offering free early education entitlement places if there are no places available in a nearby nursery school or nursery class.

There is no central appeal procedure for parents if your child is refused a place in a nursery school or nursery class. Appeals must be made directly to the school concerned.

The Admissions Criteria page sets out the Admission Criteria for Local Authority Nursery Schools and Nursery Classes clarifying if your child qualifies for a full or part time place. Go to the Criteria page.

In order for schools and childcare providers from the private, voluntary and independent sector to be able to offer a full time place to an eligible child, they must meet the quality criteria agreed by Birmingham City Council.
