Transforming walking and cycling in North Birmingham
Bike North Birmingham is an exciting project that will transform the profile of cycling in Erdington and Sutton Coldfield over the next four years. The project aims to get more people cycling more often, with fun, healthy and sustainable cycling activities planned for workplaces, schools, stations and local communities. By increasing the amount of cycling in the area Bike North Birmingham will help to improve the environment, the local economy and the health and fitness of local people.
The £6.4m project is part funded by Birmingham City Council, the Big Lottery Fund and £4.1m from the Local Sustainable Transport Fund and is to be delivered in partnership Centro, London Midland, Sustrans and Be Active.
The project includes:
Cycle Network Improvements
A mix of on and off road routes and new or improved safe crossing facilities.
Travel to work, local centres and rail stations
Including cycle training; promotional and educational activities; basic bike maintenance training; and grants to help cover the cost of cycling facilities.
Travel to school
Working with local schools to provide cycle training for pupils, parents and staff; activities aimed at creating a long-term pro-cycling culture; recruitment and training of local school champions; and basic bike maintenance training.
Delivering a range of services through two 'Community Cycle Hubs' at Sutton Coldfield and Erdington Leisure Centres including long and short term bike hire; cycle training; bike maintenance training; and cycling for health.
Travel Information and Marketing
Including creation of a bespoke Bike North Birmingham website as a 'one stop shop' for all cycling information in the area; promotion of the benefits of cycling as part of a healthy lifestyle; and events such as cycle roadshows to raise the profile of cycling within the area.
Bike North Birmingham aims to transform local cycling, showing just how much fun, fitness and freedom can be had by taking to two wheels.
