The Coroner for Birmingham and Solihull districts is an independent judicial officer presiding over a Court of Record within the English Judicial system and discharges his/her duties in accordance with the Coroner's and Justice Act 2009. The Coroner is independent from the West Midlands Police and, although appointed and paid by Birmingham City Council, she is not their employee. The Coroner is not a Local Government Officer but holds office under the Crown.
At present, the Senior Coroner, or one of her Assistant Coroners is available between 10.00am and 12.00 noon every Saturday, Sunday and Public Holiday throughout the year including both Christmas Day and Easter Sunday. The Coroner provides this service voluntarily and it is intended only for the issuing of 'Out of England' forms. If an 'Out of England' form needs to be signed please call 07980 312834. This number should only be used and will only be available between 10am and 12 midday on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays. Arrangements can then be made for the paperwork to be completed.
This service is particularly valuable for those people who wish to take a deceased person's body out of England for a funeral overseas rather than proceedings with the burial as soon as possible. You should note that in any such case you will need to employ the services of a Funeral Director. All the Funeral Directors in Birmingham and Solihull know the requirements of Her Majesty's Senior Coroner for Birmingham and Solihull and you must contact the Funeral Director before you contact the Coroner.
The Funeral Director will provide you with the appropriate application form which must be completed before you contact the Coroner's Office.
You will need to produce at least the following papers to the Coroner:
(1) Confirmation of identification of the deceased by a Medical Practitioner. In the first instance by the issuing Medical Practitioner that completed the MCCD.
(2) The Application Form provided by the Funeral Director and duly completed.
(3) Form 104 Removal Notice.
(4) The Deceased's Passport.
(5) The Applicant's Passport.
(6) A Medical Certificate of Cause of Death or a Death Certificate.
Please note that the application must be made personally by the next of kin. In the event that the next of kin is the spouse of the deceased and is too distressed to attend, then the application may be made by a child of the deceased.
Repatriation of a body
If the death occurs abroad and you wish to bring the body back to England or Wales, the Coroner may need to be involved. In certain circumstances an inquest may be necessary. You can ask advice from the Coroner's Office; please use the contact details given on this page.

In the event that the Coroner cannot be contacted out of normal office hours, then please telephone the Police Force Control Room on 0845 113 5000 who will then, on your behalf, contact one of the Assistants at their home.
There are NO parking facilities at the Coroner's Court or in Newton Street. There are on street parking meters in Steelhouse Lane and Corporation Street.
Court Hearings are held at the Coroner's Court. The Court has a communal waiting area, vending machine for hot/cold refreshment drinks with access and toilet facilities for people with disabilities. There are also facilities for the hard of hearing available in the Court and Reception area. The Court is a No Smoking area. There are no children's rooms available. Those having to attend the Court who have special requirements are requested to make contact with the Office in advance.
