Large Items Collections
It is important that you read ALL of the information on this page before you book a collection.
Bulky waste collections have moved from a Saturday-only service to a Monday to Friday service as part of the ongoing effort to modernise and improve Birmingham City Council’s refuse collection service.
The Monday to Friday service was launched on Monday 12th November 2012, and as under the previous system, up to six items can be collected at any one time – with each household entitled to three collections per year free of charge.
Important Collection Information
You must specify all items to be collected when you make your collection request. We will NOT collect any items left out for collection that are not listed on the collection crew's worksheet.
Please leave all items at the front of your property as close to the road as possible, in an easily accessible and visible place. Do not leave items on the footpath or on a public highway. The collection crew must be able to access the property and remove items safely. Please note that if items have not been presented correctly, or are too dangerous to handle (no sharp edges, points etc), or are unsafe to transport, then they will not be collected.
We will not collect the following items:
Collection of Black Sacks
Please note: If you are booking a large item collection for black bags, the maximum amount that can be requested per individual appointment is 18. If the collection contains a mix of black bags and separate items it's important to remember; 3 black bags = 1 item. A maximum of 6 items per appointment is permitted.
The same rules apply regarding the contents of black bags. Unsuitable items for example, anything from the list above. Sacks filled with items that have not been presented correctly, are too heavy, or are too dangerous to handle (no sharp edges, points etc) will not be removed.
We collect most things in a compaction vehicle, so items like bricks and gas bottles would create problems. Large items such as trees and sheds can't be handled easily by the two-man crew. But you can take these materials to your Household Recycling Centre for disposal.
To ensure fair and equal access for all Birmingham households to this very popular service, the City Council has found it necessary to introduce a collection charge for frequent users who require more than 3 large household collections (of up to 6 items per collection) in a calendar year. You can arrange a collection online by using the button above.
|Collections (per Household)||Charge||How many items per collection|
|1 - 3||Free||Maximum of 6|
|4 - 6||£15.00 per collection Payable by credit or debit card over the phone on 0121 303 1112. Cash/cheque payments can be made (in person or by post) at Montague Street Depot, Montague Street B9 4BA.||Maximum of 6|
|7||Minimum charge of £86.63 but this will vary dependant on the number of items for collection and their potential weight. Contact the Commercial Waste Team.||No limit on number of items for collection|
If you wish to pay for this service by card, please have your details to hand. We accept the following:
If you do not want to pay for a collection, you can still take items you want to dispose of to a Household Recycling Centre or arrange for registered waste carriers to take them away.
For all collections, we would encourage all households to consider whether there is a better use for your unwanted goods other than sending them to landfill. They could be used by someone else, or could be recycled or repaired. For more details see the external links below.
These changes are being introduced to ensure fair and equal access for all our residents and remains free for up to 3 collections. Many other Local Authorities make a charge for every collection.
Our refuse collectors can’t take large items along with your normal, non-recyclable household rubbish.
We will advise you of the date we will be collecting your items once your request is accepted.
- Collections will normally happen between 6am and 3pm.
- Please leave all items out by 6am on the day of collection.The earliest you can put your items out is the night before – please don’t leave things out any earlier than this.
Special Assistance for the elderly and infirm or disabled
An assisted service is available for people who are elderly and infirm or those with a physical disability. We cannot enter your property but can arrange to pick items up from immediately outside the property e.g. front door or side door if accessible. Each request will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
We will telephone you after you have made your booking and if we can assist, we will confirm when we’re able to collect.
