Birmingham City Council is the UK’s largest local authority, an organisation undergoing radical change. This means there is great public interest in everything the council does. We are looking for a creative, self-starter to join us to contribute to the management of this challenging, rapidly-changing news agenda across the full range of service areas and to the proactive promotion of council services and policies via traditional and social media. You will contribute to a shift system and out-of-hours service. You will regularly interact with cabinet members and chief officers offering advice, often concerning controversial and difficult issues.

The Corporate Media Team is responsible for proactively managing the authority's relationship with the media, providing news and information on the council's services and offering professional advice and support on all media issues.

Available 24 hours a day, seven-days a week, the team deals with thousands of enquiries from regional, national and international media a year, while also providing expert support on major events and emergency situations.

Comprising ex-journalists, private sector professionals and central and local government officers the team is able to draw upon a diverse background of skills and experience.

The team issues a constant flow of press releases, targeting news to particular journalists and cultivating personal contacts. It recognises the real and varied needs of different publications and programme makers.

The team act as a first point of contact on the city council for local, national and international media and act as spokes people on behalf of the city council.
