Birmingham City Centre was one of the first to be awarded ‘Purple Flag’ status (like the blue flags given to beaches and the green flags for parks) in January 2010 and successfully retained the status in June 2012.
The award scheme recognises excellence in managing town and city centres which support a mix of evening activity - art and music venues, theatres, restaurants, late night shopping, as well as pubs and clubs.
The Home Office-backed scheme is managed by the Association of Town Centre Management which has introduced a rigorous, independent assessment process. Applicants are assessed on every aspect of managing the night time economy from crime and safety through to transport and other support facilities.
The next full assessment of Birmingham's Night-Time Economy will be undertaken in June 2013.
