13:45 - 15:15

What is the course about?

The Study Skills course will cover all four skills (Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking) with a focus on supporting exam preparation and university study. We will work on academic reading skills (IELTS reading, note-taking, speed-reading, paraphrasing), academic listening (exam tasks, note-taking, listening to lectures), essay writing (planning and organising, related grammar) and speaking (discussions, presentations, group-work).

We will also look at methods for improving vocabulary (dictionary skills, using newspapers and television, recording vocabulary) and grammar (especially grammar related to IELTS).

What is special about the course?

Firstly, students have the option of working on one or two independent projects, an essay on a topic of their choice and/or a presentation on a topic of their choice.

Secondly, the course teaches independent study techniques ranging from internet work, dictionary work, compiling notebooks as well techniques using television, newspapers and magazines to improve vocabulary and grammar. In short, it introduces students to the philosophy of independent study required for university.
