Highway Inspection

We are required to operate a system of highway safety inspections to ensure that Birmingham roads and footways are kept in a safe condition. The Highways Service Group employs a total of 12 Highway Inspectors to carry out this specific function in its 11 parliamentary constituencies.

A National Code Of Practise gives guidelines to how the Authority should prioritise the network to decide on the frequencies of these inspections and the speed of repairs.

Generally, the network is walked at least once every 6 months. The City Centre and major shopping areas are walked monthly and main roads are driven down monthly. Highway inspectors record defects which meet the criteria for safety repair and raise orders to our in-house Direct Labour Organisation and Contractors to carry out the work.

Birmingham City Council have decided to repair any trips or pot holes greater than 20mm, and the repair should be carried out within 28 days. Any very dangerous defects will be made safe within 24 hours.

You can report a road or pavement defect using our report a Street Fault Form
