Swansong Concerts and Talks

Swansong is a community-run group which hosts evening concerts and talks at Acocks Green Library. Formed in 1993 at South Yardley Library, it moved to Acocks Green in 1995, and provides a varied programme of concerts and talks once every couple of months. Its aim is to provide low-cost events at a local venue, events which make available live music covering classical, light, jazz and ethnic music, or involve visiting speakers. Examples of concerts include English baroque music for virginals and baritone, Gospel Music, music for guitar, an Ivor Novello evening, several string quartet performances, and music arranged for clarinet and accordion.

Up to 100 people regularly come to our concerts. The group operates through a mailing list, and can be contacted by e-mailing acocks.green.library@birmingham.gov.uk. or phoning 0121 464 1738.

Tickets are free, but voluntary contributions are invited, as the group receives no funding to pay for performers. In 1999, Swansong began an association with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, and hosts concerts once or twice a year performed by small ensembles from the orchestra. The group also has an association with the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, who perform at the library showcasing works by modern composers.
