What is the Nationality Checking Service?
The Nationality Checking Service (NCS) is a partnership between the Home Office and most local authorities in the United Kingdom.
Why use the Nationality Checking Service?
The Nationality Checking Service gives you the opportunity to have your British Citizenship application checked before it is sent to the Home Office for consideration and allows you to keep your important documents with you whilst your application is being processed.
Where is the Nationality Checking Service in Birmingham?
Our Nationality Checking Service is based at Birmingham Register Office. You may have been to see us before to register a birth or a death, or you may have attended a wedding here.

What can we do?
As part of our service our fully trained NCS staff can:
- check you have used and fully completed the correct application form(s)
- check you have provided all of the supporting documents needed by the Home Office
- check you are paying the correct application fee
- photocopy your important documents so that you can keep these with you whilst the Home Office is considering your application
- send your checked and completed application to the Home Office on your behalf
What can’t we do?
We are sorry, but we cannot:
- see people without an appointment
- complete the application form(s) on your behalf
- provide a ‘fast track’ service
- confirm if your application will be successful (as this decision can only be made by the Home Office)
- give you any immigration advice or information (as we are not authorised to do so)

Booking an Appointment
If you are satisfied that you meet Home Office requirements and would like to book an appointment, please download our booking form at the bottom of the page. Once you have completed our form in full, please send it to us so we can make an appointment for you. Our address is:

Your appointment date and time will be sent to you by email (or by post if you have not included your email address in your request form). If you do not receive your appointment confirmation within five working days of posting your request form please let us know by sending an email to email@example.com quoting your full name and address.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to use the Nationality Checking Service?
No. The Service is entirely optional for those who wish to take advantage of it. You can still make your application direct to the Home Office yourself or use a solicitor or other registered immigration agent if you wish.
Will my application be processed quicker if I use the Nationality Checking Service?
No. The Nationality Checking Service is not a priority service. The time it takes the Home Office to deal with an application varies according to individual circumstances and other factors such as the number of applications under consideration at a particular time.
Will my application be successful if I use the Nationality Checking Service?
Using the service does not guarantee that your application will be successful. The service is provided to check your application has been completed correctly. The application is considered and decided by Home Office caseworkers.
Do I need to complete my Home Office application form before I come to my appointment?
Yes. We cannot carry out your appointment if you do not bring a completed application form with you.
Do I have to pay to use the Nationality Checking Service?

When do I pay the Nationality Checking Service fee?
Our Nationality Checking Service fee is collected when we arrange your appointment.
How do I pay the Nationality Checking Service fee?
You can pay for your appointment by credit or debit card. We are sorry but we cannot accept payment by cash, cheque or postal order.
Can I pay the Nationality Checking Service fee on the day of my appointment?
No. All Nationality Checking Service fees are payable in advance at the time of booking your appointment.
How do I book an appointment in Birmingham?

Can I book my appointment by telephone?
We are sorry but we are currently unable to take bookings over the telephone.
Can I book my appointment in person?
No. We are sorry but we are unable to book appointments in person at the Register Office.
Can I send my appointment request form to you by email instead of by post?
Yes. You are welcome to send us your completed request form by email if you wish to do so. Please make sure you have completed all sections and signed and dated your form before sending it to us.
How long does it take to get an appointment in Birmingham?
We aim to book your appointment to take place within three weeks of receiving your completed request form, but it may take us a little longer to see you during busy periods.
Will you give me the earliest available appointment date and time?
Yes, you will be given the earliest available date and time.
What if I need my appointment to take place on a certain date?
You should give details of your preferred appointment date in the space provided on the request form.
How far in advance can I ask for an appointment?
We generally book appointments up to six weeks in advance. You should tell us in the space provided on the appointment request form if you need your appointment to take place on or after a certain date.
How will I know if my appointment has been booked?
We will send you an email to confirm the details of your appointment (so long as you have written your email address in the space provided on the request form).
What happens if I do not have an email address?
Your appointment confirmation will be sent to you by post if you do not give an email address in your request form.
What if I have an email address but want my appointment details sent by post?
Please do not include your email address on the request form if you would prefer to receive your appointment details by post instead of email.
What should I do if I have not received confirmation of my appointment?You should send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org confirming your name, address and the date you posted your form. A member of the team will contact you as soon as possible to let you know if an appointment has been booked for you.
How long should I wait before contacting you?
Please allow five working days from when you sent your request form to us for our reply to be received. If you have not received an email or letter from us after five working days, please email us with your details so that we can check that we have received your form.
Note: you may wish to add our details to your address book so that any emails we send to you are forwarded directly to your ‘inbox’. We recommend you also check your ‘spam’ folder before contacting us, as mail may be located here if your provider does not recognise the senders details.
Can I change the appointment date you give to me?
Yes. If you need to change your appointment please send an email to email@example.com telling us your preferred appointment date.
Do I have to pay to change my appointment?
You may be asked to pay an additional fee to change your appointment. However, we will let you know if you need to do this when we receive your change of date request so that you can decide if you want to go ahead with rescheduling your appointment.
Will you refund my Nationality Checking Service fee if I cancel my appointment?
No. All Nationality Checking Service fees are non-refundable.
I am applying as the spouse/civil partner of a British Citizen. Does my spouse or civil partner need to attend the appointment?
No, there is no need for your spouse or civil partner to attend the appointment. However, you must remember to bring your marriage/civil partnership certificate and evidence that your spouse or civil partner is a British Citizen to your appointment.
Can a relative or friend come with me to my appointment?
A friend or relative, such as your husband or wife, is welcome to accompany you to the office but they will not be allowed to sit in on your interview.
Can someone attend the appointment on my behalf if I am unable to come to my interview?
No. All adult applicants must attend their Nationality Checking Service appointment in person. We cannot check applications via a third party.
I am applying for my child to be registered as a British Citizen. Do they need to come with me to the appointment?
No. There is no need for children under the age of 18 to attend a Nationality Checking Service appointment.
What documents do I need to bring to my appointment?
The Home Office application forms and guidance notes available from www.gov.uk give full details of the documents you need to send to support your application.
What happens if I do not bring my documents to the appointment?
We will be unable to complete your interview and you will need to make a new appointment to bring in any missing information.
Do I have to pay to return with any missing information?
Yes. Details of the amount you will need to pay will be confirmed at the time of your appointment.
What happens if I do not meet the Home Office requirements on the day of my appointment?
We will be unable to complete your interview and you will need to make a new appointment for when you do meet the requirements.
Will I have to pay the full NCS fee again if I need to make a new appointment?
Yes, you will have to pay the full fee if you need to book a new appointment.
What happens after my application is sent to the Home Office?
You will deal directly with the Home Office once your application has been sent to them for consideration. You will receive a letter (usually within six weeks of your application being sent) to confirm they have received your documents.
The Home Office will contact you directly if they need any more information for your application. You must return any additional documents to them straightaway and by the date given to you in their letter.
You will be notified of the Home Office’s decision as soon as it has been made.

Do I have to attend a Citizenship Ceremony?
Yes. If you are over the age of 18 and your application is successful then you will be invited to attend a Citizenship Ceremony in your local area to complete the final stage in becoming a British Citizen.
How do I arrange my Citizenship Ceremony?
If you live in Birmingham, you do not need to contact the Register Office, we will send you an invitation to attend a ceremony in the post. Citizenship Ceremonies in Birmingham generally take place weekly on Tuesdays.
If you live outside of Birmingham then please contact the local register office shown in your Home Office invitation letter to arrange your Citizenship Ceremony.
Please note: children under the age of 18 do not have to attend a Citizenship Ceremony, but can do so if they wish.
How do I apply for my British Passport?
You cannot apply for your British passport until after you have attended a Citizenship Ceremony and received your certificate of naturalisation/registration as a British Citizen.
