Birmingham and suburbs, 1909

This plan was printed shortly before the expansion of the city, in the Greater Birmingham scheme. Many people who worked in Birmingham lived in the suburbs, and Birmingham supplied the areas around with gas and water.
Birmingham also needed more land to build houses for its workers.
Birmingham and Edgbaston lay on the north-western edge of Warwickshire. Some of the areas which would be incorporated into Birmingham in 1911 appear on this map: Handsworth, in Staffordshire; Aston, in Warwickshire but still independent of Birmingham in 1909; Selly Park, Moseley, and Greet, then in Worcestershire.
