One of the founders was Benjamin Stone who was an early president of the Birmingham Photographic Society. The first photographs were presented to the City in 1892.

The collection is housed in the Archives and Heritage Serviceand runs to thousands of images; the Digital Handsworth Project has digitised all of the images relating to Handsworth, Perry Barr, Kingstanding and Oscott.
