Cartouche showing canals and churches from map of area around Birmingham, 1798
This was one of the first maps to place Birmingham at the centre. This cartouche is unusual; it was conventional to include cartouches of churches as individual buildings on the edge of maps, but here St. Philip's and St. Martin's are set in a townscape. The new canals and canal offices appear in the foreground. Eighteenth century Birmingham businessmen had invested heavily in canals, and Birmingham is said to have more canals than Venice
