H. V. Morton

Journalist and travel writer Henry Vollam Morton was born in 1892. He entered journalism on the staff of the Birmingham Gazette and Express in 1910, and became its Assistant Editor in 1912. Reference copies of this newspaper can be seen in the Library of Birmingham's Archives, Heritage and Photography section.

Morton was sub-editor of the London based national newspaper The Daily Mail from 1913-14, and served in the Warwickshire Yeomanry during WWI. After that, he worked for the (London) Evening Standard from 1919 and the Daily Express from 1921. From 1931 - 1942, he was "special writer" at the Daily Herald. He was the editor of Empire Magazine (London) in 1913.

He became a Fellow of the Royal Society for Literature.(FRSL). Greece made him a Commander of the Order of the Phoenix in 1937 and he was awarded the Italian Cavaliere, Order of Merit in 1965. He died on 18 June, 1979.

His addresses were given as c/o Odhams Press, London, in 1938, and Schapenberg, Somerset West, Cape Province, South Africa in 1965.
