Scenes In Slumland

A journalist, J. Cuming Walters, wrote a series of articles for the Birmingham Daily Gazette entitled 'Scenes in Slumland'. These exposed five aldermen and the Deputy Chairman of the Health Committee as being slum landlords, and described the appalling conditions that many poor people were forced to live in. There was a public outcry following these revelations and in June 1901 the Council reluctantly agreed to set up a new Housing Committee.
