Important Notice

From 25 July 2011, the Health Exchange, BARC (Birmingham Arthritis Resource Centre) and the Macmillan Cancer Support Information Point will be located on Floor 1 of Birmingham Central Library. You need to go through the Lending Library and down to the lower mezzanine floor. Wheelchair access is available via a non-public lift, so please ask at Customer Services in the foyer if you need help.

The Birmingham Arthritis Resource Centre, in Birmingham Central Library, is a unique and exciting initiative, aimed at the thousands of people in Birmingham who suffer from arthritis. Priority client groups are people from ethnic minority communities and disadvantaged groups who find it difficult to access information on arthritic conditions.

The Centre is the first of its kind and is a result of a partnership between the Arthritis Research Campaign, which provided the setting up grant, the University of Birmingham, whose staff run the centre, and BirminghamLibraries, which has provided the accommodation.

The Centre provides a range of information in different formats and information advice is on hand from the Centre staff. Leaflets and audio cassettes on osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis have been translated into six languages, Gujarati, Punjabi, Urdu, Bengali, Cantonese and Arabic.

The Centre is extending its works and services into local communities. Community bases are being established and specialist nurses and trained volunteers are available to give talks. Special events and and talks are sometimes held in the Central Library.

The Birmingham Arthritis Resource Centre is situated in Central Library in the Health Exchange and is open during Central Library opening hours.
