Birmingham City Council

Creative Learning with Archives

The role of the Creative Learning Officer

Since July 2004 Birmingham City Archives has employed a Creative Learning Officer (CLO). Using funding and support from Creative Partnerships, the CLO supports the use of archives with schools and young people in Birmingham. The CLO acts as a link between the City Archives, teachers, young people and other agencies to plan and coordinate creative heritage projects using archives.

Nikki Thorpe and Izzy Mohammed, our Creative Learning Officers, have worked on a number of projects with schools across Birmingham as part of Creative Partnerships, including The Ballad of Baskerville, Building Bricks, Box of Delights, Journeys, Who Are We? and A Shared History, A Shared Future.

We also work to promote archives awareness more generally across Birmingham. We have worked with Community Libraries and other Community Groups to lead projects like Turves Green Intergenerational Project - Same Old Place.

We aim to introduce participants to the archives and library services, using them creatively to uncover the vast potential that exists to explore practically anything with them.
