Edgbaston was consciously developed as a garden suburb long before the concept became fashionable. It foreshadowed Bournville, which emerged much later, in being closely controlled from the outset by a single family - the Calthorpes. Their conservationist concerns restricted commercial development and helped to create a green, semi-rural environment with numerous fine Victorian houses.
