Castle Bromwich, Castle Vale and Shard End
Peter Drake and Marian Baxter

The two large municipal estates of Castle Vale and Shard End and the pretty village of Castle Bromwich do not appear, at first, to have much in common. However, these areas share a very rich and fascinating history; the mysterious murder of Mary Ashford in Shard End nearly two hundred years ago and the controversy surrounding the trial of Abraham Thornton; the only surviving example of a formal eighteenth-century garden in the British Isles in Castle Bromwich and Birmingham's aerodrome and aircraft factory in Castle Vale which built most of the Spitfire aircraft used during World War Two.
