Prison Library Reading Group




The Prison Library Reading Group, also known as
'The Bookies', consisting of inmates, prison officers and prison library staff, has won the Short Story Reading Challenge 2007, run by the Reading Agency.

The group at Winson Green Prison compiled a shortlist of 'Must Read' stories, from over 200 candidates, based around a specific theme and consisting of stories of no more than 12 pages, which they thought would be a good way of getting people to read. The group began reading in October 2006 to determine the final five favourites for their anthology;

1. Draculas Guest, Bram Stoker
2.Lamb to the Slaughter, Roald Dahl
3. Death on Denial, ONeil de Noux
4. Happy Valley, John Cleese and Connie Booth
5. Being Frank, Ian Rankin

The groups selection came out on top when placed in competion with 100 other groups around the UK. The prize for the winners was a special visit from author,Roger Ellory

The Reading Group also took part in theBlack Swan Green Big Read.
