Councillor Iain Bowen - My News - Acocks Green Ward
I am pleased that I represent an area with a high degree of social housing which is one of my main areas of interest.
The Council have completed the first phase of the Decent Homes Programme which involved the fitting of new central heating systems, loft insulation, new windows and doors. I know that these works have been well received by tenants. We are now moving onto phase two of the Decent Homes Programme of kitchen & bathroom improvements which I hope will be as equally successful.
On Transportation issues I have been very involved with CENTRO to ensuring that the new 40 service was introduced following the decision by National Express not to run the old 41 service. I hope that this new service is used by local residents.
I have also highlighted the fact that Acocks Green station is one of the last stations in the city which is not accessible by people with disabilities. I will continue to press the Government to release funds from their Access for All Programme to fund the necessary adaptations.
I work closely with the Police to tackle crime and anti social behaviour in Acocks Green. I am very pleased that Birmingham has the lowest level of crimes of all the major cities in the UK. It is also particularly pleasing that crime in Acocks Green has according to police statistics fallen during the last 12 months, although more needs to be done if crime is to be reduced even further.
I know from my post bag and from comments made by residents that they value the kerbside collections of bulky items, the work undertaken by the graffiti removal squad, the gardening work and the provision of alleyway security gates which has had a positive impact in reducing crime. I am committed to ensuring that these positive local services remain as they are of benefit to thousands of people on an annual basis.
