Junior Options - Swimming Instruction

Youngsters who have successfully completed the Junior Strokes programme or are very competent swimmers can learn a variety of new skills:

• Rookie Lifeguard – lifesaving skills
• Personal Survival Award
• Performance Awards – Bronze, Silver, Gold
• Water Polo
• Synchronised Swimming


To enrol, pupils must be:
• Able to swim 100 metres effectively
• Confident in deep water
• Able to submerge fully and tread water.

Junior Options are available at selected pools and subject to demand. Ask your local pool for details.

The following options are available:

Rookie Lifeguard

The Rookie Lifeguard programme is the junior award scheme of the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK). It is specially designed for 8 -12 year olds and is great fun.

As a Rookie, you will learn special lifesaving skills to help you save yourself and know what to do if others get into difficulty in the water. You will also learn what to do if someone stops breathing.

The award contains survival, rescue and sports skills as well as life support and water safety elements, so they are great fun to do.

The Rookie programme is divided into 3 stages: Bronze, Silver and Gold. At each stage, there are 3 badges, plus lots of other special badges you can work towards.

Personal Survival Award - Basic and Intermediate

To enrol, pupils must be:
• Able to swim 100 metres effectively
• Confident in deep water
• Fully submerge and tread water

Performance Awards – Bronze, Silver and Gold

This class covers personal survival skills, stroke technique, distance swimming, building speed and stamina.

To enrol, pupils must be:
• Able to swim 400 metres effectively
• Confident in deep water
• Fully submerge and tread water

Water Polo

Water polo remains one of the most exciting water-based games. Children are invited to join classes at pools. All children learn basic water polo skills in a friendly, yet competitive environment. Opportunities also exist to join water polo clubs around the city.

Synchronised Swimming

Synchronised swimming remains one of the most demanding water-based sports. It requires strength, flexibility, stamina and a sense of rhythm. Learn to Synchro classes are available at selected pools. Opportunities also exist to join a synchronised swimming club.
