War Memorials: Board of Guardians

This striking memorial is unusual, in that it commemorates not only those killed in a war, but also those who fought and returned.

It has been moved to the Council House, near to the main reception. It is not in a public area, but may be viewed on request.

Beneath an etched copy of the City's coat of arms, the text on the centre panel, all in upper case, reads:

This tablet is erected in ever grateful memory of the officials of the Birmingham Board of Guardians who gave their lives in the Great War 1914-1918

And lists the names and dates:

  • Astbury, T. L. - 21st March 1918
  • Cash, W. - 19th August 1917
  • Chester, G. H. - 26th October 1918
