Birmingham City Council

Road Naming and Property Numbering

Birmingham City Council has a legal duty to address all new developments in the area. Addressing Services are provided by the Highways Information Section in Economy.

Developers are encouraged to suggest new road names which reflect the cultural, historical or geographical nature of the site or area. Usually we do not accept roads named after people, although we will give due consideration to any application commemorating someone no longer living which details the reasons in full. Where properties are to be addressed from existing streets, numbers should also be allocated by the Highways Information Section.
Suggestions for new road names are considered by Local Ward Members and subject to their agreement, postcodes are then obtained from Royal Mail.

Developers should contact Highways Information at an early stage of development to ensure that postcodes are available for utility connections and addresses are allocated prior to properties being occupied.

Note: Postcodes are issued by Royal Mail only on receipt of details of allocated property addresses by Birmingham City Council. Further information on postcodes can be found on the post office website.

The Addressing Services staff can also help if your address is not shown on Royal Mail’s Postcode Address File (PAF) and so is not displayed on its address search web page. Send details of the address to the Team on the form below, completing Section 4.

Generally changes to existing road names are discouraged as this may mean a number of properties having to be re-addressed and difficulties may occur in relation to informing banks, building societies, utility companies etc.
