Birmingham City Council

Road Naming and Property Numbering

Transportation Development, Highways Information Secion are responsible for carrying out the naming of new roads and property numbering.

As a policy, Birmingham City Council encourages developers and their partners to submit a proposal for new roads which have a local connection either historically, geographically or culturally. Usually we do not accept roads named after people although we will give due consideration to any application which details the reasons in full. Developers should contact Highways Information at an early stage within development to ensure that the property addresses are allocated prior to properties being occupied.

Note: Postcodes are issued by the post office on receipt of details of allocated property addresses by Birmingham City Council. Further information on postcodes can be found on the post office website.

Generally changes to existing road names are discouraged as this may mean a number of properties having to be re-addressed and difficulties may occur in relation to informing banks, building societies, utility companies etc.
