Citizen-led Quality Boards

Are you passionate about improving the lives of Birmingham’s most vulnerable citizens?

If so, we need your help.

We currently have vacancies for several volunteer 'experts by experience' to help us to improve the quality of adult social care in Birmingham. We are particularly interested in hearing from people who live in residential care, who receive a Home Support (Home Care) service, or who have recent experience of having their needs assessed by a social worker. If you are interested in applying, you can download an Application Form and Terms of Reference for the Boards below.

Every day (and night) of the year, thousands of older people and disabled people in Birmingham depend on help and support arranged and paid for by Birmingham City Council. It is very important that this help and support is delivered with dignity and respect, and that people have as much choice and control as possible over their care.

Social care services work best when the people who use them, and their family & friends, have a say in designing, delivering and reviewing them. As an ‘expert by experience’, you can help us to understand what works well and what doesn’t.

Our Quality Board for Assessment & Support Planning looks at the social work service - how we talk to people about the support they need, decide how much (if any) help we can provide, and work out how they would like to receive it. The Quality Board for Commissioning looks at the quality of the support that the Council provides or pays for (including residential care, home care and support outside the home), or that people buy with their own money.

To be a Board Member you need to be passionate about wanting to improve the lives of the city's most vulnerable citizens. We are not offering payment but we will meet your expenses and provide training and support.

There are videos of three Board Members talking about their work on YouTube:

Mike Hughes
Bernie Redmond
Andrew Attah

Charles Alldrick – an appreciation

In July 2013, the Citizen-led Quality Board for Commissioning lost one of its founder members – Charles Alldrick. Charles made a valuable contribution over many years to improving the lives of vulnerable people in Birmingham. He used his experiences as a carer for his wife and as a disabled person himself, to argue for improvements to social care services in Birmingham. He felt particularly strongly about people being charged for the care services they received, and argued that the ‘Fairer Charging’ policy was anything but!

Although he was persistent and challenging in his dealings with the Council, he was unfailingly polite and respectful. He was a very reliable and diligent member of every group he belonged to, and the Citizen-led Boards will greatly miss his contribution.
