You must be on the electoral register to vote in elections.
In order to be added to the Register of Electors, you must make an application to the Elections Office. You are not automatically registered to vote, even if you pay council tax, or have registered to use other council services.
Make sure you're registered
A new electoral registration system started across the country on Tuesday 10 June 2014.
- In the past, one person in the household was responsible for registering everyone who lived there.
- Under the new system – called Individual Electoral Registration (IER) – each person is responsible for their own registration.
It's free, quick and easy to register to vote online.
You just need your national insurance number. It’s on payslips, letters about benefits, tax returns, and other official correspondence.
