Birmingham City Council

Lord Mayor of Birmingham - Councillor Shafique Shah

Councillor Shafique Shah is first and foremost a Brummie, having lived in Birmingham and Bordesley Green since childhood.

Education has always been an important aspect for him and its ability to provide great opportunities to progress in life. He was educated at Sir Wilfred Martineau School and progressed on to graduate in mechanical and manufacturing engineering being qualified to Incorporated Engineer status.

Following his graduation he joined a well known telecommunications company to take up a senior managerial position. Working for this company The Lord Mayor acquired very useful entrepreneurial skills which motivated him to progress into business for himself. Having travelled extensively around the world on business visiting countries such as China, Malaysia, Canada, America and Dubai, he has experienced a great diversity of social cultures which are all reflected here in Birmingham.

He has been married to Sadia for 20 years and has five wonderful children, Salhia, Hasan, Saman, Sanya and Muhmmad.

The Lord Mayor although a keen traveller of the world has as yet not found any city as welcoming and warm as his home of Birmingham. He always feels a great pride in being able, when asked, to say he is a Brummie - from Birmingham, a city with great diversity of culture and heritage.

The Lord Mayor has always had a desire to serve the community and put something back in recognition of what the country and city have given him and his family. He has been a school governor in the east of the city for many years and is the chair of Governors at a local girls' school.

In 2005 he made the decision to stand as a candidate for Birmingham City Council and felt privileged to be elected by the residents of Bordesley Green Ward as their Councillor.

Apart from his family and travel, The Lord Mayor's interests include following Birmingham City Football club, horse riding, running, working within the community and with his local neighbourhood forum and of course politics.

One of the main things The Lord Mayor is looking forward to is the opportunity to meet as many regular, hard working citizens of the city that time will allow.

He intends to accept as many invitations as he can to visit city schools and meet the young people that will be the future leaders of our city.

Shafique is very proud of Birmingham and will work hard as an ambassador for our great city to show the world all the positive aspects Birmingham and its citizens have to offer. His hope is to make the people of Birmingham proud of their Lord Mayor.

Sadia Shafique Lady Mayoress

The Lady Mayoress has always been a strong support to The Lord Mayor in both his business life and his political career. As a full time mother she has an immediate empathy for the needs of young people which she hopes will assist the Lord Mayor in his mission to empower the young people of Birmingham.

She has always been available to help local residents with their problems and issues. She has a large circle of friends and enjoys family life and keep fit when time allows.

She is very proud of Birmingham and involves herself in local schools and education.

Sadia is looking forward to visiting and supporting city charities during the year and promoting Birmingham.

She feels very privileged to have the opportunity to be able to have the opportunity during the year to meet residents from all parts of the city.
