Air Quality Action Plan

The 1995 Environment Act requires the City Council to produce an Air Quality Action Plan to address air quality in the area. This follows on from the declaration of the city as an Air Quality Management Area for nitrogen dioxide (2003) and fine particles (2004). The first Action Plan was issued in 2006 to address emissions and concentrations of these pollutants.

As part of the review and assessment process, the 2004 declaration for fine particles was revoked in 2010 following a detailed assessment of monitoring data.

Birmingham City Council has subsequently undertaken a major review of its Action Plan. Following a full consultation with action owners and the wider public the new Air Quality Action Plan (2011) has been issued and is attached below.

Because the main source of pollution in the City is from motor vehicles the Action Plan remains integrated with the West Midlands Local Transport Plan (now at version 3).
