Birmingham has nearly 2,000 buildings listed for their architectural or historic interest. These range from the 12th century Church of St Laurence in Northfield, to a signal box at New Street station built in 1964; and from cast iron Victorian public urinals to one of the great Jacobean houses of the country, Aston Hall.
Listing a building gives it legal protection, so that it can be preserved for future generations to enjoy.
