Support and services for Carers

Who is a carer?

You are a carer if you look after a friend, relative or neighbour who has a long-term disability, mental health difficulty, or is frail due to old age, and you are not paid for the care you provide.

You may be helping them with:

  • personal care, such as washing, dressing or taking medication;
  • practical care, such as support with shopping, cooking and cleaning; or
  • emotional support if they are lonely, worried or get upset.

You do not have to live in the same house as the person you care for to be their carer.

There is a range of services available for anyone who is a carer. You can get more details from the Birmingham Carers Centre and the Market Place websites.

Carers Break Grant scheme

Carer’s Break Grants restarting 1 July 2013

From 1 July 2013, the £250 carers break grant will reopen for new applications. It will continue until this year’s allocation of money has been used.

Please ensure that you apply using an up to date application form. Guidance notes are also available. You can download a copy of these below.

As part of the work on Birmingham’s Carers’ Strategy, the scheme is under review. We will be finding out carers views on how this money should be used in the future. To help with this review carers will be asked to complete a questionnaire.

Carers Break Grants are payments of £250 provided by Birmingham City Council. Carers can only get a grant once every two years and the person they care for must live in Birmingham.

Who can apply?

In order for a carer to apply for a grant the person they care for must:

• Be over 18 years of age
• Be resident within the City of Birmingham

We also ask carers to send proof that they are providing ‘regular and substantial care’.

A carer is providing ‘regular and substantial care’ when caring has:
• A significant impact on their day to day life;
• Takes up their time and energy and
• Is negatively effecting their physical or emotional health
